The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) supports the intervention of the High Seas Alliance, particularly on anthropogenic underwater noise pollution. We note this sentence from paragraph 18 of the Secretary-General's background note: "Anthropogenic underwater noise pollution is also an area of concern requiring further attention." Language in paragraph 13(g) of the 2017 Call for Action provides a basis for further action. We also support the language in paragraph 10(d) of the zero draft. It is essential that we identify and effectively conserve areas of global importance for biodiversity (such as Key Biodiversity Areas) and those of high ecological integrity, as well as those ecosystems that are particularly vulnerable (such as coral reefs and mangroves). These details could be brought forward within this paragraph.
Evonne Yiu (UNU)
01:37:21
This is Evonne Yiu, from United Nations University (UNU) based in Tokyo, Japan. We would also like to see emphasis on land-sea connectivity and the impact of land-based activities on the marine environment, so as to involve stakeholders beyond interest holders of marine issues and mainstream ocean conservation across various (land-based) sectors. Emphasising on land-sea connectivity will also justify and promote linkages between SDG 14 with other SDGs. Suggested language “emphasising on land-sea connectivity” to be added to Para 10a or 10d or where appropriate.
